AMU MATH 120 Intro to statistics WEEK 5 lesson NORMAL PROBABILITY DISTRIBUTIONS American Military University
- WEEK 5: NORMAL PROBABILITY DISTRIBUTIONS
Lesson Overview
In this lesson we will be studying Normal Distribution and Central Limit Theorem.
Students will be able to:- Explain the normal distribution
- Find areas under the standard normal curve
- Find probabilities of a normal distribution using a table and technology
- Apply techniques to find z-scores, x-values and specific data values of a normal probability distribution
- Explain sampling distributions
- Apply the Central Limit Theorem to find the probability of a sample mean
In this lesson, we will discuss: - Normal Probability Distributions
Key Learning Concept - Explain the use and misuse of statistical concepts.
- Employ inferential statistics to analyze sample statistics and relate them to the population. The following activities and assessments need to be completed this week:
- Reading: Understanding Basic Statistics Chapter 7
- Forum 5 – Midterm Reflections
- Homework 5 in WebAssign
This reading corresponds to the following course objective:
CO-1. Explain the use and misuse of statistical concepts.
CO-5. Employ inferential statistics to analyze sample statistics and relate them to the population.

Assignments, Tests & Quizzes
Assignment – Homework 5 Homework 5 will be completed in WebAssign. WebAssign is interactive and will assist the students in learning the course objectives for the week. This assignment corresponds to the following course objective:- Apply the use and misuse of elementary statistical concepts.
- Compute measures of central tendency and measures of dispersion to summarize data collected from real world scenarios.
- Solve basic probability problems.
- Apply concepts of probability distributions to real world problems No quiz this week.
- WEEK 5: NORMAL PROBABILITY DISTRIBUTIONS
Lesson Review - This week you began working with normal distributions and the standard normal distribution and finding probabilities and finding values, and by the end of this week you will have learned about the sampling distributions and the Central Limit Theorem. During the upcoming week, you will add Confidence Intervals. Before moving on to the next week, be sure you have completed the following:
- Reading: Understanding Basic Statistics Chapter 7
- Forum 5 — Midterm Reflection
- Homework 5 in WebAssignNext week’s lesson will consist of confidence intervals for the mean where sigma is known and where it is unknown along with confidence intervals for population proportions.
