- WEEK 3: Working with Graphics and Creating and Using Tables
Lesson - Setting Up a Document
Create a New Document and Set Up a Master PageThis lesson focuses on creating a new document, using master pages, using guides, using the Transform panel and the Control panel, working with the line tool, and transforming objects. The first dialog box you will see when you create a new document in InDesign is the New Document dialog box. In this dialog box, you will set up the basic settings for your document. There is new information on page 3-5 concerning setting the starting page and number when creating a document. so make sure to set this when you get started. You will also be able to specify measurements for margins and for the number of columns in a document here as well. Be sure you understand that once they click OK, you can’t return to the New Document dialog box to modify those settings. The Document Setup dialog box does allow you to change the page size and the number of pages, but there is no option to modify margins or the number of columns. However, once you have created the document, tthe margins and columns can be modified with the Margins and Columns command under the Layout menu.Master PagesCreating Master Pages for a document is is essential in InDesign, because you can use the Master on any of the pages you want to create and to guarantee you will have identical layouts. This is important, expecially if you want to have multiple pages look alike, as with the building of Web sites.Pages PanelThe Pages panel menu has a command called Move Pages which allows you to move pages in the Pages panel without having to physically drag them. When you have many pages, this is the best option so you are sure your pages are where they need to be.
Creating Text for Master Pages
This lesson will show you how to create text for master pages, and it is imperative that you know how to do this before doing anything else. To create a new master page for a document, just click on the New Master Command which is located on the Pages Panel Menu. This is when you can name the master pages, which is important so you use the correct one when you want to use it again. To load master pages from one InDesign document, just click the Pages panel options button, then click Load Master Pages. You will also be able to create automatic page numbering by creating placeholder text frames for page numbers on their master pages. Page number placeholders should be the same size, in the same location, and formatted in the same way to have a consistent layout on your document.
Modify Master Pages and Document Pages
Any object found on the master page (a text frame, a graphics frame, or an automatic page number format, for example) cannot be changed on the document page to which the master is applied unless you override the master page to make the change. To make changes to the document in which the master is applied, press Shift][Ctrl] (Win) or [Shift][command] (Mac) and then click to select the same text frame. Pressing these keys overrides the master and lets you edit the selected object. Making any change to a master page object on a document page will not affect the master page or any other pages based on it. However, changing a master page object in this way does break the link between the object on the document page and the same object on the master page.
