BUT YOU RESPONSING TO THE POST: New ActionsResearch Question:How do experiences of racial bias in healthcare settings affect pregnancy and childbirth outcomes for black women?A social issue that I have recently become very interested in is black maternal health and how racial bias affects pregnancy and childbirth in black women. Studies have proven that while giving birth, black women are 3 times more likely to die or have complications when compared to white women (Gilliam et al., 2024). Why is this? Institutional and structural racism significantly contribute to the elevated maternal mortality rates among black women in the United States. Other factors can include implicit bias in healthcare and the limited access black women have to quality care. These circumstances can be detrimental to black woman and their birth experience.In chapter 2, the author discussed the difference between qualitative and quantitative research. Upon reviewing both research methods, I determined that qualitative research would be the most effective approach to answering this research question. The chapter explained that qualitative research focuses on personal experiences rather than numbers. I believe that in-depth interviews that explain detailed descriptions of black women and their birth experiences could produce accurate and critical data.Before recently becoming a new mother, I found myself constantly researching and speaking to other mothers about their birth experiences. After a while, I noticed this caused me to become very anxious about giving birth to my son. This anxiety was caused by the many horror stories I read and heard about black women once they arrived in the delivery room. Their voices were not heard, and often their pain was not taken seriously during delivery. My personal experience with anxiety and hearing other black women’s stories support the need to explore lived experiences through qualitative research to improve maternal healthcare for black women.Exploring this research question will allow for improvement in the healthcare system in the United States. It will also provide better care for black women and help alleviate the fear a lot of black women have surrounding giving birth.
