NU631 Scientific Inquiry for Evidence-Based Practice Week 1 Discussion Time to Dissect Research Studies
Overview
Here is a list of five peer-reviewed nursing research journal articles on nursing research that are available through the Regis Library. Choose one of them that is of interest to you to read. Cody, S. E., Sullivan-Bolyai, S., & Reid-Ponte, P. (2018). Making a connection: Family experiences with bedside rounds in the intensive care unit. Critical Care Nurse, 38(3), 16–26. Initial Post
Based on the research article you read, respond to the following prompts:
What, if any, was the theoretical framework that was used by article author(s)? Describe the framework; was it from nursing or a borrowed theory? Describe how the framework was used to inform the research study. How much did the researchers write about it in the journal article? For example, was it weaved throughout the paper or mentioned only in the beginning? In your opinion, what other nursing theory might have worked with this research study? Why? NU631 Scientific Inquiry for Evidence-Based Practice Week 3 Discussion Identifying Research Gaps by Interviewing an Expert Clinician
Introduction
You should have met with an expert clinician who works and/or studies in your chosen research area of interest (for example, masters or doctoral-prepared nurse, MD, PsyD, PhD, PA). This person might be a colleague or peer where you are currently employed, a local hospital or other organization, an author of a research paper you read, or someone you found during an Internet search. You could have met with this person in person, using Zoom, or over the phone, but your conversation must be a verbal discussion that lasts approximately 20 to 30 minutes. During the interview, you should have asked the expert: what gaps in knowledge in the science they believe exist; their recommendations they have for you to conduct research to figure out how to fill these gaps; what gaps in knowledge in the science they believe exist. Other questions asked should have included: What recommendations do they have for you to explore these knowledge gaps? What articles and journals do they recommend for you to read? Which organizations would be relevant for you to join and participate in that relates to your clinical research area of interest? What tips do they have for being a clinician researcher in nursing research? Initial Post
After completing your interview, please respond to the following:
Write a 250– to 300–word summary of what you learned from the interview. Write a reflection on how the interview will help guide you in your research as you are thinking about an EBP, QI, or novel research proposal that you will be working on throughout the course. Include at least two scholarly sources to support your summary and reflection. Instructions
For this assignment, write the Sample Section of your EBP Project Proposal in a Word document. Here is a Week 8 Sample Section Example (Word) of what the sample section can look like. Sample Section Guidelines This section covers your planned recruitment and ethical considerations for your future participants. It should take up about two to three pages, or approximately 350 to 500 words. The purpose is to tell the reader what your recruitment plan is for the study. You should have subheadings throughout this section of the paper.
In this section, write about the following:
Sample: Cover the following points in no more than two paragraphs each:
How subjects will be recruited What the inclusion criteria will be (for more expansion, you may add the exclusion criteria to show what was consciously eliminated) The type of sample (random, purposive, convenience, etc.) The proposed sample size and rationale for this choice The selection method (random table of numbers, flip a coin, etc.— this depends on the type of study) Although this subsection should cover all these items, it may be written in a narrative style. Setting: Keeping in mind that this is a proposed setting, and it should not be recognizable for confidentiality and privacy reasons. It is a broad view of the setting. For example: The proposed setting for this study is a large teaching hospital in the northeast. The actual place where the study would be carried out is in the three medical–surgical units in this hospital. Each unit has a bed capacity of 25–30 beds with occupancy rates of 92% to 95%. The study will take place in a private conference room.
Or, if a mailed questionnaire or survey is to be used:
The proposed setting for data collection will be by mailing the questionnaire to the homes of the subjects. The researcher would be mailing the questionnaires from home with a return-addressed, stamped envelope. Informed Consent and Ethical Considerations: Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval will be obtained. The researcher will submit an application and proposal to the Regis College IRB first. After approval from Regis College, the institution where the study will take place usually requires IRB approval as well. The request or application may be one of three types: NU631 Scientific Inquiry for Evidence-Based Practice Week 9 Assignment Writing Your Literature Review Section
Overview
You will write your Literature Review Section of your EBP Project Proposal. Here is a Review of Literature Example (Word) to use as a model or guide. To conduct your literature review, you begin with the search strategy, gather your resources, then start writing your literature review and gap analysis. Search Strategy In the literature review section, you are to identify your search strategy, which can include the following: the databases and internet sites or search engines used to explore the literature (CINAHL, Medline, Google, Yahoo, etc.) the search terms you used the beginning and ending dates of the period covered in this study the time period when the search was conducted (e.g., Fall 2008) any special journals hand-searched and any relevant sources used in performing the literature search Description of Literature or Gaps in the Literature The literature review section is a review of studies that are related to your phenomenon. It should take up about eight to ten pages, or approximately 3,000 to 4,000 words. The purpose is to tell the reader what is known about your phenomenon and lead the reader to what is not known about your phenomenon (your research problem). You should have sub-headings throughout this section of the paper. The literature section discusses the relevant research related to your study. Do not discuss each study individually; instead, synthesize the literature based on your literature matrix. You can discuss individual findings of studies (include all eight studies that you described in your literature matrix in Weeks 4 and 9) as appropriate including the statistical findings and study samples. This section needs to tell the reader what is known about your clinical area of interest. You will also summarize your review of the literature and discuss the gaps you have identified.
