Goal Statement Good evening, my name is, and I am currently enrolling in the CACREP-accredited Master’s Counseling program at Walden University. From an early age, I discovered my natural ability to actively listen to others, and my passion for counseling was shaped by my personal experiences growing up in a household where my own feelings often went unheard. This realization led me to envision a future where I could provide a voice for those who feel silenced and support individuals in navigating life’s challenges. My upbringing further solidified my commitment to mental health advocacy. My parents were foster caregivers, and I often witnessed children being prescribed medications without first being offered evidence-based interventions. Many of these children expressed that no one truly listened to their struggles; instead, their emotions were quickly addressed with medication rather than therapeutic techniques that could have helped them develop essential coping skills. Seeing this inspired me to research the effects of these medications and the importance of alternative interventions. I wanted to understand why so many children were left feeling unheard and unsupported, and I became determined to be a part of the solution. I strongly believe that mental health is just as important as physical health, and my goal is to make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals by providing them with the tools they need to cope, grow, and thrive. Through my work in intensive in-home counseling, I have had the privilege of working with families and witnessing firsthand the impact of dedicated support. Seeing success unfold in the lives of those I assist has only strengthened my passion and desire to expand my knowledge and skills in the counseling field. Enrolling in Walden University’s Master’s Counseling program is the next step in my journey to becoming an effective and compassionate counselor. My ultimate goal is to empower individuals, advocate for mental health awareness, and emphasize the importance of communication and emotional well-being. I also hope to set an example for my children, showing them that it is not about where you start but how you finish. I am eager to enhance my skills and continue making a positive impact in the lives of those who need it most. Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely, Janae Boone Why I Desire to Become a Counselor I am currently enrolling in a CACREP-accredited course with the goal of becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) after graduation. Through my work in intensive in-home services and my previous studies in psychology, I have witnessed how often individuals neglect their mental health. While working with families and children, I have also observed how frequently medication is prescribed before fully understanding the root cause of their struggles. Recognizing this pattern has strengthened my resolve to be an advocate for those in need. My personal motto has always been: If I can reach even one person, I know I am fulfilling my purpose. From an early age, I realized I had a natural ability to ask probing questions, encourage meaningful conversations, and actively listen. Growing up in a household where we were often told to be quiet only intensified my desire to listen attentively to others. Additionally, my experiences with foster siblings further opened my eyes to the challenges children face. I saw how, rather than being heard, their emotional struggles were often met with increased medication. Witnessing this inspired me to become a voice for those who feel unheard and to find solutions that address the underlying trauma rather than just the symptoms. While I am still exploring the exact path I will take within the counseling field, I know with certainty that I want to become a Licensed Counselor. My passion for understanding and supporting individuals extends beyond just mental health; it also includes fostering inclusivity and cultural awareness. Cultural Interaction Experience One significant experience that shaped my perspective occurred during a workplace potluck. A Muslim man and woman on my team initially chose not to participate, opting instead to eat separately due to dietary restrictions. At first, I was unaware of the cultural differences at play, but after learning more, I wanted to ensure they felt included. I suggested scheduling the potluck at a time that accommodated their prayer schedule and encouraged the team to research and prepare dishes they could also enjoy. When the next potluck took place, they expressed their gratitude for my efforts, hugging me and thanking me for not judging them. This experience reinforced my belief that small acts of understanding can make a profound difference in making people feel valued and accepted. I also realized that understanding cultural differences goes beyond tolerance—it requires active effort to adapt environments and promote inclusivity. By fostering open communication and encouraging others to embrace diversity, I learned that respecting cultural differences strengthens relationships and creates more collaborative, welcoming spaces. This experience continues to shape how I approach interpersonal connections, ensuring that everyone feels valued and respected, regardless of background. It reinforced my belief that creating inclusive environments not only promotes harmony but also enriches experiences for everyone involved. Forming Effective Interpersonal Relationships In my professional journey, I have gained valuable insights into group dynamics. Initially unfamiliar with working in large group settings, I quickly learned the importance of respect, active listening, and adaptability. Not everyone shares the same views, and it became clear that effective communication requires recognizing different communication styles and adjusting accordingly. Patience was key in building strong interpersonal relationships within group settings, as understanding others takes time and effort. Working in intensive in-home counseling and conducting one-on-one sessions has further refined my skills in empathy, patience, and trust-building. I have learned that establishing rapport is essential for individuals to feel safe opening up about their challenges. My approach focuses on solutions while ensuring that my clients do not internalize blame for their circumstances. I strive to maintain open communication, creating a space where they feel free to express themselves without fear of judgment. My journey thus far has reinforced my passion for helping others navigate their struggles and find strength in their voices. I am eager to continue my education and training at Liberty University, where I can further develop the skills necessary to make a lasting impact in the field of counseling. Counselor Definition

profession and your career goals. Life Skills

  • Many life experiences and skills developed in your past will serve you as a professional

counselor. Consider skills (do not include technology skills) you have obtained from current or past employment, community volunteer services, or extracurricular activity experiences. Summarize two or three skills that will make you a competent professional counselor. Feedback

  • Training to become a professional counselor requires deliberate growth and development

including receiving and applying constructive feedback.
