Week 6 Discussion Post 13 Document | HIM 500 - Healthcare Informatics
For this weeks discussion I chose scenario #2. In this scenario there are multiple challenges present starting with cyber security and a potential data breach. Being part of the military we have constant trainings on just cyber security and data breaches alone that is completed every year. Cyber security is a real threat that comes with everything being electronic these days. That is why policies and procedures are put in place to prevent or combat it as soon as possible. With the scenario the laptop being left with a colleague should have not happened. Knowing what is on the computer and that I am responsible for it, it should have been taken with me to the bathroom. With the laptop being missing all information on that computer could be considered compromised. I would first follow protocol and alert tech support, assuming that it is just lost is not a reason to not contact tech support. Even though I may be in trouble for misplacing the laptop the consequences would be much worse if protocol was not followed. b Policies should be clear and outline the expectations or rules of ethical situations to create a how to if these situations arise. Ethics help outline how the policies are defined, framed and analyzed. So this means "ethics can have a profound impact, both on the character of the policy process and the choices made by decision makers"(Boston et al., 2010). They both help influence each other to create a balanced rule that is implemented. b If an individuals ethics are not in the same level of the organizations then it can result in many complications for the individual and the company. For instance say the company you work for is asking you to do something that you feel is wrong or know is wrong. This would make you feel very uncomfortable and asking yourself questions like if you should do it or not, will you loose your job if you don't? These can cause stress on the individual resulting in possibly leaving their job. The same can be said the an employee is breaking policy and ethics of the company it can cause termination of the employee as well as a negative impact on the company due to the indiscretions of one individual.
