The American literary scene has typically had wide diversity, but contemporary literature shows an intriguing, expansive multiplicity. As we move along further into the twenty-first century, you may have noticed that trends in writing are sporadic, in a good way. Writers are using their own unique crafts and talents and combining them with what has already been done before. You may have noticed the increasing popularity of including different perspectives of the characters within the novels.
In this lesson, you will be able to read about different cultural, gender-based, geographical, and generational expectations in the emerging literature. We will also take a look at several contemporary authors and discuss how their craft has contributed to the American literary scene.
Topics covered in this lesson include:
The Rich Tapestry of American Literature
Jhumpa Lahiri
Sherman Alexie
Sandra Cisneros
Alice Walker
Cathy Song
