ENG2211 Native American Eloquence Negotiation and Resistance

ENG 2211 TU Native American Eloquence Negotiation and Resistance Questions

  1. Judith Sargent Murray wrote about what she called the independent female mind. Based on your readings in the Introduction section on Murray and her writings, does her view of equality for women mirror the issues women's rights advocates rally for today? If so, how? If not, how is Murray different and why. As always be specific and quote from the text to support your position. (worth a possible 10 points)
  2. Philip Freneau is known as a great journalist and poet of the Early Republic, though, as we learn from the Introduction section on him in our textbook, his talents didn't exactly make him a millionaire. However, Freneau's position in life did give him access to education and experiences that helped him to craft various writings and poems that are often seen as visionary in nature. Based on what we read in our book, was Freueau a tolerant friend of the Native Peoples? Is so, why? If not, why not? As always, support your ideas with quotes from his writings. (worth a possible 10 point).
  3. Phillis Wheatley wrote about great persons of her time and gained fame as a published writer at a time when few women enjoyed such accomplishments, particularly enslaved women. Based on what we've read about Wheatley in the Introduction and in her own writings, was she one of America's first Nationalistic writers? If so, how? If not, why not? You may want to define the term 'literary nationalism' as you begin your essay and discuss how Wheatley's work does or does not fit this definition as you develop your essay. (worth a possible 10 points).
  4. We begin this portion of the course where we started--with Native voices. By the 1700s, negotiations between settlers and Native peoples are active, engaged, and often quite bloody, as we learn from reading the Native American writings in our textbook on Negotiations and Resistance. Based on your readings of that section (Norton Volume 1, 9th Edition, pgs. 985-996), can you see evidence of these text being 'bi-cultural composites,' of texts based on what the Indian said but rendered in English translation by English translators. Again, be specific, and quote from the readings to evidence your stance.
