Week 7 Required Resources · Brief report: Recruitment and retention of minority children for autism research Zamora, I., Williams, M. E., & Higareda, M. (2016). Brief report: Recruitment and retention of minority children for autism research. Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders, 46(2), 698–703. This article specifically addresses the challenges and strategies involved in recruiting and retaining minority children in research, which is directly relevant to the ethical inclusion of ethnic minorities in research studies. It provides concrete examples of how researchers can ensure minority children's well-being and respect their rights. · The Ethics of Research with Children and Young People: A Practical Handbook Alderson, P., & Morrow, V. (2020). The ethics of research with children and young people: A practical handbook. SAGE Publications, Ltd. Read Chapters 9 and 10. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the ethical principles involved in research with children and young people. It covers essential topics such as informed consent, harm prevention, and respect for participants, making it highly relevant for addressing the ethical treatment of children in research. Week 7 Optional Resources El Gemayel, S. M., & Salema, Y. (2023). Negotiating power dynamics through co‐reflexivity in research with young children in disadvantaged communities. Children & Society, 37(5), 1596–1611. As a supplemental resource, this paper can offer additional depth to the discussion by providing concrete examples of how ethical principles are applied in specific research settings. It can help illustrate the importance of addressing power dynamics and ensuring ongoing consent, which are critical considerations in ethical research. · Challenges and innovations in research on childhood Weller, D., Hobbs, S., & Goodman, G. (2014). Challenges and innovations in research on childhood. In The SAGE Handbook of Child Research (pp. 363-370). SAGE Publications Ltd. This chapter provides an overview of the challenges and innovations in conducting research with children. While it is informative and covers broad ethical considerations, it is less focused on the inclusion of ethnic minorities. Ethnic Diversity in Research Zamora, Williams, Higareda, Wheeler, and Levitt, (2016) report on research design biases in health research. Studies tend to underrepresent Latinos and other ethnic minorities. Latinos are underrepresented because of the exclusion of non-English speakers. Studies frequently classify Latinos and other non-white participants in an ‘‘other’’ category. The authors point to surveys that indicate that African American and Latino participants frequently distrust research and the medical community. Sometimes, they may have limited knowledge about what research, especially biomedical research entails and the potential consequences and/or benefits of participation. According to Burlew et al. (2011), research findings that utilize predominantly European-American substance-using samples may not be generalizable to specific racial/ethnic minorities. Therefore, it is necessary that when you conduct your study that more research focus on racial and ethnic minorities to obtain information that will reduce and ultimately eliminate racial/ethnic disparities in the prevalence of substance use and to accurately evaluate the efficacy of substance abuse treatment interventions with racial and ethnic minorities (Burlew et al., 2011). George, Duran, and Norris, K. (2014) emphasize that despite an understanding of the importance of racial and ethnic minority participation in clinical research, racial and ethnic minorities continue to be underrepresented in clinical research. This absence of ethnic diversity creates problems with the generalizability of research findings and equality in the provision of health care. The report that despite the fact that racial and ethnic minorities constitute more than 30 percent of the U.S. population, racial and ethnic minorities constituted only 17 percent of FDA clinical trial participants in 185 studies over a 5-year period. One of the reasons given for this disparity is that research has historically been conducted by White researchers and has targeted mostly White participants. Recruitment strategies developed for White participants were found not to be effective in the recruitment of minorities. Be sure to review the resources carefully. You are expected to apply the information from these resources when you prepare the assignments

Critique Current Research on Child Development Background Information You are a researcher planning to conduct a study involving children in an inner-city school. The school principal has informed you that parents might be hesitant to allow their children to participate. To address these concerns, you will write an article aimed at parents, showcasing examples of recent research involving ethnic minority school-age children. The goal of your article is to reassure parents that the research will be conducted ethically and to demonstrate that their children will be well-protected.

Instructions

Selection of Research Articles: Choose five recent peer-reviewed research articles that involved ethnic minority school-age children as participants. These articles should exemplify ethical research practices. Summaries of Research Articles: Provide a concise summary of each selected research article, highlighting the key findings and how the study was conducted. Protection from Harm: Explain how each study ensured that participants were protected from harm and that their decisions were respected. Well-being of Participants: Describe the measures taken in the research to ensure the well-being of all participants. Fairness and Benefits: Discuss how the outcomes of the research emphasized fairness, particularly in the distribution of benefits among participants. Inclusion of Ethnic Minorities: Highlight how each study included ethnic minorities as subjects, emphasizing the importance of their inclusion in research.

Writing Guidelines:

Tone: Write in an informal, yet informative tone that is appropriate for an audience of parents. The tone should be conversational and accessible, helping to build trust with the parents. APA Documentation: Even though the article should be informal, you must still document your sources using APA format, 7th edition including in-text citations and a reference page.
